Texas Holdem Starting Hand Nicknames

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Holdem Poker has a rich tapestry of character. From old days on the Mississippi to modern day internet whiz kids, poker has been played all types of people in all manners of locations. Subsequently almost every hand in poker has a name and can tell you a story.

The most powerful hand before the flop in Texas Holdem Poker is two Aces. Subsequently they generate the most excitement and colourful names. The most common names for two Aces are Rockets, Pocket Rockets, and Bullets (for obvious reasons). They are named after several famous people and organisations with initials starting with the letter “A” including Alan Alda, Albert Anastasia, and American Airlines. They are also known as numerous pointy and sharp objects including Rocky Mountains, Sticks, Teepees and Two Pips. A few obscure references include Squirrel (the nuts) and Batteries (Double A). Individual names for a single Ace include Bull, Bullet, Death Card (spades), Mastercard, One Spot, Puppy Foot (clubs), Seed, Sharp Top, Spike and Tax Card (spades).

Two kings are another strong hand preflop in holdem and are commonly known as Cowboys. Another name is Butchers of Baghdad (so named in reference to Saddam Hussein on the Iraqi most wanted playing cards). Alliterations of KK include Krispy Kreme and King Kong (and also Gorillas, Gorillas in the Mist). Ace Magnets is common because an Ace always comes on the flop. A King is also known as David (spades), Julius Caesar or One eyed king (diamonds), K-Boy, Monarch, Sergeant, Alexander (clubs), Charlemagne or Charles (hearts). Another fitting term for this hand is The Elvis Presley (The King of Rock n Roll).

Queens often have nasty nicknames, partly because of the number of times they are beaten by Aces and Kings, but also through reference to homosexuality. Some nicer terms include Lovely Ladies, Ladies, Calamity Jane (likely extensive of Cowboys for KK) and Snowshoes (resemblance to the original shape of snowshoes). Crude nicknames include Siegfried and Roy and B***hes.

Middle and small pairs such as Jacks through to Twos all have a nickname or two. Jacks are called either Hooks or Fish-hooks. Less known names include Rent boys, Kid Dyne-o-mite (TV show reference), Brothers, Jay Birds, John Juanda (Poker Player) and Colostomy Bag (as Jack is slang for toilet in some countries). Two Tens are commonly referred to as Two Dimes, TNT and Binary (In Binary 1010 is the equivalent of 10). Nines are known as Barbara Feldon (named after the actress from Get Smart- Agent 99), German Virgins (Nein, Nein), Phil Helmuth (Won WSOP in 1989), Popeye, Pot hooks and Wayne Gretzky. Two eights are Snowmen, Little Oldsmobile, Racetracks, Snowmen, Two Fat Ladies, Lacey, Pretzels, and Wurlitzer. A pair of Sevens are axes, mullets, hockey sticks or walking sticks. A pair of sixes is known as Boots, Cherries, or Kicks (On Route 66). Two Fives are known as Presto, Snakes or Speed Limit. Two Fours are Canadian Presto, Dark Force, Darth Vader, Magnum and Sail boats. Threes are known as either crabs (shaped like the number 3) or treys and a pair of Twos is Deuces, Ducks, or Quack Quack (reference to shaped like a duck).

Other hands with nicknames include the powerful Ace and King combination known as Big Slick. Other names include backronyms such as Korean Airlines and King Arthur, as well as the aptly named Anna Kournikova (looks good but seldom wins). Another common reference is Kalashnikov (who designed the AK47). Ace-Queen is known as Big Chick or Mrs Slick. Other notable hands include Jack-Four (Flat Tire) and J6 (Rail Road). A Ten and a Deuce is a famous hand known as the Doyle Brunson after he successful won two World Series of Poker bracelets.

There are thousands of hand nicknames and only a few of the commoner ones have been listed here. If you are interesting in other poker starting hand nicknames I recommend checking out Wikipedia for an extensive list of common names.

A Guide To Poker Tells: Reading The Competition

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

One of the most fascinating and critical parts of poker is the extraordinary ability of great players to be able to read a player and work out what cards they hold. Everybody has poker tells and the best players know that the more attention you pay, the more information you can gain about someone. Poker tells include everything that you do at the table from moving chips, speaking and even involuntary mannerisms.

The Eyes Reading a player starts with their eyes. Watch how they view the world and you will gain insight into their thoughts. An opponent who glances at their chips immediately after seeing the flop is thinking about betting and likely has a monster. Some players will stare at their hole cards longer than normal when they have a big hand. When the flop comes down and the player stares at the flop as if staring straight through it, they have often missed.

The Hole Cards Double checking the hole cards usually means a weak hand. People don’t often double check big pairs because they remember what it was the first time. Looking away and uninterested after seeing the hole cards is a dead give away for strength. Squeezing out the second hole card sometimes means the first card seen is an ace. Checking the hole cards on a flop that is all the same suited usually implies someone doesn’t have the flush.

Betting Patterns Strong means weak and weak means strong, when someone is bluffing, they feel the need to look strong. If you notice a player forcefully betting his chips, he is probably bluffing. If a player looks and then checks instantly, it’s unlikely that he improved his hand.” When a player at the table takes an unusual amount of time to act, this is generally an indication that he has a big hand. If a player looks at his hand then bets instantly, it is highly unlikely that he is bluffing. As said above, a forceful or exaggerated bet usually means weakness. So what do you think a soft and innocent looking bet means? It almost always indicated that the player has a strong hand.

Chip Stacks Studying how the chips are put out, the amount of bet, whether it is large chips or small chips can give clues to betting tells. Loose aggressive players usually have unorganised stacks while tight conservative players keep neat stacks. Some players keep two stacks in cash games, these type of players will stack their winnings off to the side or in front so they can easily tell how much they are up on the game. If you can determine this, they will be less likely to call a bet which would put them in the red for the game, unless they have a very strong hand. If you ever notice a player winning a large pot, and perhaps may still be stacking their chips from it, they will not play the hand unless they have good cards.

Voice Changes If a player is talking smoothly while in a hand, it means he is not overly concerned about the hand he is playing. This is because he feels comfortable and usually means a big hand. Any speech means strength. Any question directly at your or the dealer means strength e.g. Is it my turn to bet?. An opponent that is acting rude is trying to induce a spite call.

Every player gives off tells, try to remain patient and always watch the table even when you aren’t in a hand.

Online Poker – Moving Up In Limits

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

People play poker for a lot of different reasons. Some play for the competition, some for the social aspect, and some play for the pure fun of the game. When these players sit down an play poker they generally don’t mind much if they loose a few bucks. This is the price of entertainment for some players. Other players play strictly for the money. This group of players is all business and have only one goal in mind. The reality of it is that most of play the game for some combination of reasons and money is on most of our minds to some extent or another.

If, like me, you play strictly for the money than there are a few things that you should always be focused on. Moving up to the next limit and continually getting better at poker. If you continue to improve your game, your bankroll should continue to grow. With your increased skill and a bloated bankroll you should have no problem steadily moving up from limit to limit until you reach the big games. For online players there are some traps. I often see promising low limit poker players get caught up with focusing on the wrong things and they never make it out of the micro limits. Remember that the big money is in the big games and that’s where you want to be.

Most online players play more than one table at a time. This is fine as long as you keep in under control. A lot of online poker players find that they can double their win rate by playing 2 table at once. Why not quadruple your win rate and play on 4 tables at a time? This is probably fine too but some players take it way too far. There are players who play 16 table at once at the micro limits and make decent money. The only problem is they never seem to get any better. This what I call “The MultiTable Trap”. Your bankroll will grow but you will not continue to learn and improve as a poker player. This means that when your bankroll is ready to move up to the next limit you probably will not be. Players who fall into this trap often spend years bouncing between the micros and small stakes getting pounded every time they try to move up to the tougher games. This is a tough place to be and in the long run you will probably find that you’ll make more money if you focus on becoming a better poker player.

Another related trap is the rakeback trap. While rakeback is great and should be taken advantage of by every serious online poker player, you should treat it as what it is; Something extra. Players often get caught up in earning as much rakeback as they can rather than trying to get better and move up. I often see players playing online who stop moving up when they get to 3/6 or 5/10 limit hold’em. These limits will allow you to make good money just in rakeback if you play enough tables, but, again the real money is in the big games.

So remember, if you want to make the real money it isn’t in playing sixteen tables tables at a time at the micro stakes. It’s in the bigger games. Rakeback and multitabling are great ways to increase your winrate. Just make sure that you don’t go overboard and stop improving your game.

Decreasing Losses With Rakeback

Monday, June 28th, 2010

When poker players are playing poker on the Internet, one of the fees that is paid is called a “rake”. The rake is paid by players on each pot in a game. For an individual who plays a lot of on-line poker there are many benefits to participating in a rakeback plan.

The rake on a game is usually not very high, about five percent on the pot with a maximum of $3 being the cap paid by a player. However, if an individual plays poker for several hours a day, and on multiple tables, this can quickly add up. The term “rake” was coined from the fact that fees can “rake” up very quickly for many players.

Poker sites have different ways of calculating the rake for each pot. Some figure the rake based on the amount of the pot and number of people at the table. Other website figure the rake on the number of people who are actually playing for the pot and the amount of the pot. In either case the amount of rake paid is normally almost the same.

A player has the opportunity to get some of their rake back by participating in a rakeback plan. Poker sites who participate in rakeback pay an internet rakeback site from 35% to 45% of the rake that they collect on each pot. The rakeback site then pays individuals a percentage of the money collected based on the plan that they are participating in.

When a person visits a rakeback website they will find a list of poker sites that participate in the website’s program. The list will include the percentage of rake being paid by the poker site. In addition, the list includes information about any promotions that a particular poker site may be offering.

There are many on-line poker sites that offer bonuses to players to register with them. The bonus is added to the deposit that the player makes. Usually the bonus will match a deposit up to a maximum amount. This money is added to the deposit and the rakeback is paid on the total amount when it is played.

Rakeback websites offer many incentives for registration. Some work exclusively with poker sites that offer bonuses and rakeback at the site. When a person plays poker on one of these sites, they receive rakeback from the on-line poker site. They will also receive rakeback from the rakeback website that they are registered with.

Rakeback is a great way for an individual to accumulate money that they may not have known was available. For poker players who spend time playing multiple tables each day, a rakeback plan can give them money back on each game they play whether they win or lose. By doing the necessary research to find a rakeback website that works closely with their on-line poker partners one can increase earnings significantly.

Don’t Disregard The Many Benefits To Using Rakeback

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Every poker player that plays for real money will do well to take advantage of a Rakeback deal. In fact, a good deal ensures that you can take a bite out of the number one enemy of the novice poker player that is just starting to play with real money. As a beginner to online poker you will already have found that it is really very difficult to move from playing for play money to playing for real money.

The concept of the Rakeback first began in the year 2004 though at that time it was known as Rakemeback and it also was the brainchild of some online poker professionals that wanted to provide other online poker players with a service that was trustworthy as well as reliable. Rakemeback was based on the expert knowledge of professional poker players.

Today, the new version of Rakemeback can help you the poker player generate a lot of money though how much money is actually generated will depend on a number of factors. The two main factors however are the percentage as well as rake that are generated. What’s more, it is possible to estimate the amount of rake that you can generate and that in turn will help you know how much of the new Rakemeback version you are entitled to.

For example, if you play one thousand hands and there are a total of six poker players on your table and the blinds vary from two to four dollars and the rake is three hundred and thirty-three dollars and the percentage of rake is thirty percent. In such a case you will get back one hundred dollars.

Similarly, if you play one thousand hands and there are ten players at the table and each blind varies from one to two dollars and the rake is one hundred and fifty dollars. If the rake percentage is thirty percent then you will only get back forty-five dollars. Furthermore, to play one thousand hands, you would normally need to spend about five hours on two different tables.

In fact, one of the restrictions imposed in the deal can be that you are not able to play at any poker table that takes your fancy; in fact, you will only be allowed to play at certain tables and then you will need to adhere to specific rules.

It therefore pays to be extra cautious about which Rakeback deal you go for and if an offer is out of the ordinary it will be a good idea to avoid it as chances of not getting paid will be higher. Furthermore, the amount from the Rakeback will also change according to factors such as the percentage as well as the rake.

What’s more, depending on whether you play at a six player or ten player tables you will generate different amounts of money. So, take this factor into account as well before deciding to take up any offer.

How To Increase Your Odds Of Winning With Rakeback

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

If you are looking to get the most from your online poker play, then you should certainly look into what is known as a rakeback.

Poker rooms online take a cut from every pot played. This cut is called a rake. This is the fee casinos charge for allowing players to participate in their poker rooms. Players receive benefits from the casinos for playing through rakes that they take from each pot played. Players get paid back some of the money from the rake payout. These payouts are very similar to the comps offered when you go into a standard casino.

If you want to make the most money possible when playing online, and of course you do, then you will want to find the poker rooms that give you the most money back through their rake payouts. This can be very important for some players. When you are receiving superior payouts, you can use the extra money to your advantage when playing against players who do not receive the same returns through their payouts.

Not all rooms give the same benefits though. Some rooms give more money in paybacks than others. This makes it important to shop around for the room that gives you the best bonuses. If you want to find the room that gives you the best bonus returns, then you should certainly search online for websites that compare the major poker room’s rake payout percentages. To find the room that pays out the most money from their pot fees, you should find the company that gives the largest pot percentages in payouts.

Then, when you go to play, you will know you are getting more money back from the rake then you could get playing in any other room around.

If you do not want to pay any money out in fees, then you should look into rooms that do not charge fees on every pot played. These tables have completely removed their fees, because they have found they are able to generate extra income by encouraging poker players to take advantage of the other games they offer. Playing at tables that do not charge a fee on pots can save you a large amount of money in the long run.

Some people find it difficult to win when they are constantly bombarded by rake fees. To win at a table when you are paying out rake fees, you not only have to compete with other players, but you have to stay ahead of the rake fees draining your poker account. If you do not want to have this additional challenge when you are playing poker online, then you should certainly look into rooms that do not have large fees.

If you play in online poker tournaments, you will find that the rake is not taken every hand, but is charged through an entrance fee. If you are playing in a regular room during standard play, the player expenses are usually only taken when there is a flop in games like Texas hold’em.

There are some tables that charge a fee based on the amount of time that elapses during play. These rakes are commonly taken every half hour.

To increase your income, and decrease the drain of fees, you should choose tables that take the least amount of money per pot played, or the tables that give you the most money back through a rakeback.

Rakeback: Who Really Benefits

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Before determining winners here, we first need to understand just what rakeback is, and how the money flow operates. Rake back is, in its simplest form, a movement of money from the poker room to the affiliate and back to the individual player. The hope is that the player will reinvest this money back into the poker account generating more business. In practice though, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Before looking at who benefits, lets identify the parties that are involved and just what their roles are in a poker rakeback program. While the poker player and the poker room are quite obvious, the role of the affiliate may need some explanation.

Rakeback affiliates are simply out there recruiting players for the various online rooms. These affiliates have websites where they offer rakeback deals from several rooms that may vary from 25% to as high as 50%. These affiliates are in business to attract new customers for the poker rooms, and to get those players to stay. So with the roles defined, let’s move on and see where the benefits are.

First we’ll look at the player’s benefits. Online poker players pay rake on nearly every hand of poker that they play. This is a fee that the poker room charges to keep the games going, and it certainly can add up fast. A player with a rakeback deal gets a percentage of this fee back from the affiliate that “recruited” him to the site. The obvious advantage for the player is money in the form of a rake rebate.

Poker affiliates have the same motive. These rakeback affiliates are individuals or companies that get paid by the poker rooms to go out and sign new players up to their sites. The poker rooms then pay these affiliates a percentage of the rake that all of their players generate. Some (not all) of this money is then paid back to the players to keep them happy. Happy players tend to spread the word and attract more players and more money.

Finally we look at the poker room themselves and why they allow rakeback and how it helps them. The answer is an easy one. Rather than investing a large budget in advertising their brand, the poker rooms have the affiliates do that promotion for them. In addition, rakeback is generally a good way to encourage a sense of loyalty between players and the poker room. In short it is a good business decision to allow affiliates to offer rakebacks to prospective players.

Simply stated, everyone involved in the rakeback process is well served. The player has a portion of his rake returned to him, the affiliate gets to keep a portion of all of his player’s rakeback, and the online casino or poker room gets to continue to grow their revenue and their player base. They also are required to pay affiliates only when the affiliate performs with new player sign ups, rather than paying commissions to an advertising agency regardless of results.

It appears the only one who doesn’t receive a benefit is those who are not involved in the process. Rakeback is free. It doesn’t require you to play poker anytime or anywhere. Good luck in your future table play.

Rakeback For Beginners

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Do you play online poker regularly? Do you get rakeback? Have you ever heard of rakeback? If you have no idea what rakeback is all about, this article could help you understand it and probably help you save money. Using rakeback, a losing player could suddenly become a break even player. A break even player would be a good winner and the good winner would turn into a very good earner. There might be some questions on your mind while you are reading this.

Rakeback is defined as the rebate that you get from the money that you pay the poker house. Every hand that you play is charged accordingly and a piece is taken by the poker house. The money that they get is what we call the rake. The poker house usually charges from $1 to $5 for each pot played. With the help of these charges, the casinos and online gaming rooms are able to pay their personnel. Most of the time, you may see that these rakes are small and very insignificant. However, look at it closely; the house is already gaining much money from your game. With this, you can get a rebate. You can now ask how.

Rakeback providers will track your online play and the amount of rake that you pay. Your rake is generally calculated by dividing the amount paid in rake by the number of players at the table. So if a pot is raked $3 and there are 6 players at the table, you would be credited with $0.50 worth of rake. The rakeback provider will then pay you a percentage of that $0.50 back at the end of the month/week/day. Generally the payout is between 25% and 50% of your total rake generated. Still this seems insignificant if you look at one hand with a $3 rake, 6 players at the table, and 50% rakeback. This is a rebate of $0.25 only. But again if you look at the big picture you will see that over a thousand such hands you could make $250.00. What if you play 10,000 or even 30,000 hands a month. Rakeback starts to add up quickly especially if you play multiple table at a time online. Some players are currently making over $5000 a month in rakeback alone. This is on top of any money you win at the tables.

Even for those who play online poker casually with a hundred hands or so, rakeback is very helpful for them. There is no limit on the number of hands that you can play, and you can immediately begin earning rakeback even for smallest limits. This extra money is what the house keeps for themselves and you can still play online poker like there’s nothing new. Registration for a rakeback account is totally free and there are absolutely no other fees charged.

Well, it’s your poker money and you can do whatever you want with it. If what you want is to get a piece of it back though, you should set up a rakeback account immediately.

Hundreds of poker sites are available online and this wealth of information can be hard to navigate through to find details. Initially, some of these sites may appear to offer training of little substance which would not be worth the time or money needed to participate. Potential players should invest a little research and should be aware of what details to look for in different programs before paying for a particular course or registering for free training. Rakebackftw.com has a plethora of information including many articles which give details on various poker training sites.

While looking for the best training, players should look for websites which show real hands of poker players with different levels of expertise. The option to list a hand by hand analysis would also be beneficial for those who want to improve their analytical skills in poker. These features give great tips for understanding why certain moves were good or bad during a game.

Sites which offer one on one live training, such as via chat, can be beneficial. This option is usually only available on paid sites, due to the manpower involved. However personal training is an important method where players can understand what they are doing wrong to improve their winning rate.

Players should carefully read and search internet forums where unsolicited comments and reviews are posted about various training sites. A good resource is Rakebackftw.com which has multiple forums discussing the virtues (and bad practices) of particular training courses.

With the right training, potential poker players can increase their skill level from beginner to expert status. If players wish to join poker tournaments in the future, they should research and seek out the best possible training course which fits their level and needs.
